Preventing Childhood Obesity

More than 23 million children and teenagers in the U.S. are overweight or obese. This means nearly 1/3 of American children are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, conditions commonly associated with adults. Learn more about Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

A leader in childhood obesity prevention, the Y is committed to keeping kids active and healthy. At The Community YMCA, we continue our work to combat the devastating effects of childhood obesity in our area.  Here are just a few of the initiatives the Y is doing to help families and children get active and live healthier:

  • Healthy U – Through a partnership with The Horizon Foundation, children in our after school programs participate in “Healthy U,” a health and physical activity initiative.  “Healthy U” will also be expanding to all YMCA preschool programs this fall.

  • Healthy Kids Membership – The Y provides a free membership to all Red Bank kids in grades K-8. Last school year, 354 kids and their families participated, taking advantage of Friday night gym time and Saturday afternoon family swim at the Y.

  • Shaping Red Bank – Through “Shaping Red Bank,” a community health coalition started in 2010, the Y and local partners are helping families and local school children make healthier food choices at Red Bank bodegas.

Annual events such as YMCA Healthy Kids Day, Family Fun Fest, Health Series seminars and more, encourage kids and their families to stay active and healthy together.
