Tips for a Safe Summer
Keep your family safe this summer with these imporant tips.
When Swimming:
- Never leave children unattended when by a pool or at the beach. Always have a "lifeguard" on duty.
- Don't overcrowd your home pool. Crowded pools are dangerous pools!
- Pay attention to swimmers in shallow water.
- Plan ahead when taking children to the pool or beach. Bring sunscreen, floatation devices or life vests if needed.
- Never allow diving in shallow water pools.
- Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arms length.
Bike Riding:
- Have children use a helmet every time they are riding their bike.
- Buy a bike that is the right size, not one that your child needs to "grow into"
- When purchasing a child's helmet, look for a label or sticker that says the helmet meets CPSC safety standards.
- Children shouldn't start to ride a 2-wheeled bike until they are ready, at about age 5 or 6. Consider the child's coordination and desire to learn to ride.
- Make sure helmets fit well and are securely fastened. They should be level and not tipped forward or backward.
Out in the Sun:
- The first and best line of defense in the sun is covering up. Wear a hat with a 3 inch brim, sunglasses that block 99-100% of ultraviolet rays and cotton clothing.
- Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak hours of the day (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.)
- Apply sunscreen to children every 2 hours, with an SPF of 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
- Dress babies under 6 months old in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts and brimmed hats to prevent sunburn.
- Everyone should reapply sunscreen every few hours, or after swimming or sweating.
